2 Days Yangon to Kyeikhteeyoe Pagoda Golden Rock – Bago

Mt Kyaiktiyo’s Golden Rock, one of Myanmar’s major landmarks, is delicately balanced on the edge of a cliff and crowned by the 24-foot (7.3-meter) Kyaiktiyo Pagoda. Once you arrive at the base camp of Kin Pun, continue up the steep path to the Golden Rock by open truck, about an hour’s mountain drive. Disembark and take a light trek on foot to the summit to enjoy the sunset and panoramic views. Famous for its precarious position and religious importance as a Buddhist pilgrimage site, the huge granite boulder is completely covered by gold leaf, which is passed on by (male) devotees. Hear the Buddhist legend about the origin of the Golden Rock from your guide as you marvel at its purplish hue in the glow of dusk.

Day 1: Yangon – Kyaiktiyo – 200 km riding  ( L , D )

Your professional guide will pick you up from your hotel in the morning by taxi outside of Yangon and start riding for the 5-hour (approx.) drive to Kyaiktiyo from Yangon. Be whisked away from the colonial capital, traveling through the Burmese countryside past emerald-green rice paddies en route to your destination. The highlight of your day is Mt Kyaiktiyo’s Golden Rock, one of Myanmar’s major landmarks, delicately balanced on the edge of a cliff and crowned by the 24-foot (7.3-meter) Kyaiktiyo Pagoda. Hear the Buddhist legend about the origin of the Golden Rock from your guide as you marvel at its purplish hue in the glow of dusk. If you happen to travel to Kyaiktiyo during the pilgrimage season (November to March), you’ll see pilgrims lighting candles, chanting, and meditating amid the enchanting atmosphere of the holy mountain. Spend some time around the pagoda plaza before descending back down and driving to your accommodation. Overnight: Guesthouse in Kyaiktiyo

Day 2: Kyaiktiyo – Bago – Yangon (B , L )

After breakfast at your guesthouse, drive through small villages, wander local markets, and explore the glittering pagodas of Bago with your guide before heading back to Yangon. First, take a 30-minute walk to Kyee Kan Pa Sat (Crow’s Mouth Cave), an important place of worship for the local people. On the way, you’ll pass shops selling handicrafts and local produce. When you reach the cave at the top of the mountain, you can make a wish by tossing coins into it. In the mid-morning drive to Bago (en route to Yangon) through rice fields and small towns. Upon arrival at the former seaport, once the capital of the Mon Kingdom founded in the 15th century, wander the local market and enjoy a guided visit to some local landmarks. Visit Kanbawza Thardi Palace, which was built by King Bayinnaung, and see the Kalayani Sima (Ordination Hall). Marvel at the 10th-century Shwemawdaw Paya — Myanmar’s tallest pagoda — and Shwethalyaung Pagoda, home to the world’s second-largest Buddha, which many consider to be the world’s most beautiful reclining Buddha.
